Understanding my night time dreams has become such a part of my life that I am actually surprised at times when I realize that not everybody values them the same way. My own dreams have provided countless benefits to my life, and they have become such a part of me, that I cannot imagine not writing them down, or trying to remember what I was doing, or where I was before I woke up. I start my day with my dreams, knowing that I have just come from a realm where I am gaining insight and understanding for this realm.
As I have learned along this journey of dreams, many of those insights are easily understood by going over the dream in my mind, as I ask Holy Spirit to reveal it to me, or during prayer or by sharing it with a friend. Yet, others or so elusive I have no idea how to unravel the crazy scenarios. No matter the type of dream though, I am convinced that our spirit is fully aware of what is being relayed, and that it is our soul (mind, will, and emotions) that is trying to understand the message, work out issues, and come into alignment with the Spirit.
We can get too caught up in trying to understand the details of a dream. I have done it many times over, and will in the future I am sure! But I have discovered that even if our conscious mind has not grasped the meaning of a dream, we can still be led by the Spirit onto the path we need. This will come by following those nudges you feel throughout the day. When you have a feeling you should go here or there, or call a person out of the blue, or search something out on the internet, pick up a book that has been sitting on your shelf for months or years, and suddenly you have made a connection of divine nature, because your spirit was leading, even though your soul was not aware.
Galations 5:25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
Such an occasion happened to me this morning.
I dreamed of driving a car to a construction site and drove over a bridge to get there, where my dad was the builder of a new building. I was watching him put pieces together, and part of the structure was in place, but it was really in the beginning stages, where the ground was still dirt. Then suddenly I am sitting at a round table with two people, a man and a woman, and they are talking, especially the woman. We are sitting beside a piece of the corner structure on this construction site, and I am facing the woman, who has her back to the building being built. As she is talking, a brown spider comes down on a web behind her head. I try getting her attention, but she doesn’t stop talking. The spider goes back up the web and I finally reach out and touch her arm to get her to stop talking, and I ask if she is afraid of spiders, she says no, and just then the spider comes back down the web, with another spider in its clutches, getting ready to devour it. End of dream.
I knew the dream was speaking about something my heavenly Father was building, but it wasn’t until I called a friend, and as we began to talk about the dream, revelation started coming. I encourage you to share your dreams with people out loud, because I cannot tell you how many times the meaning of a dream has begun to flow by saying the words out loud!
Here is my understanding of the dream: My dad was representing my Father in heaven. He is in the process of building something new in my life. Crossing over a bridge to get there indicates connections are being made to bridge the gap in order to get there. This project is in its beginning stages, and being built from the ground up.
Suddenly, sitting at a round table, I am listening to some people who look very distinguished and business like. A round table is often where plans are made, where people are brainstorming. A spider comes down, and I see it, although the woman is not the least put off by it. Spiders in my own personal dreams have often been warnings, and the particular type of warning will often be witchcraft, or word curses.
Now, when we hear the words witchcraft and word curses we might picture a woman with a black hat and a wart on her nose mixing up a potion to cast a spell. That’s not what I mean when I say those words. Dreams are most often symbolic, and seeing a spider in a dream that indicates witchcraft simply means there are words being spoken that are creating a web that can get you stuck. Me sitting at a construction site where my Father is building something, and seeing spiders dropping down on webs tells me that I need to be careful of what I am listening to. Well-meaning friends and family, and of course not so well-meaning friends and family, may be saying words that would be a discouragement that would keep you from believing what God has for you. These can be negative words, things like “that would never work because…” or “you need to do it this way or else…”
We need to be sure that we are listening to the Fathers words over our lives. We need to seek His voice, because…
Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it~Psalm 127
For me, this dream came on the heels of spending an afternoon in an office, sharing a new business idea with a professional, and he spent the majority of that time letting me know every good reason that my ideas would not fly. Our friends, family and even professionals whom we consult for advice can give us great insight, but we have got to be listening to the Lord first and foremost, because HE is the one we want building our house! People for the most part aren’t trying to throw cold water on our dreams, or cast webs over our ideas in order to freeze us in our tracks. Most people don’t see their words so powerful, but they are! Every word plants a seed and we have to be diligent to weed out what we don’t want growing in our hearts and minds. No need to be offended, just Spirit led.
Speaking of being Spirit led, I will go back to the point I started with.
If we are allowing ourselves to be led by the Spirit, He will guide us along the right paths throughout our day.
After realizing what my dream was about, I decided to look up a teaching video that a friend had told me about weeks earlier. I didn't really know what it was about, but at the end of the video, a man decided to pray over people, to break witchcraft off of the listeners. This was just a little blurb at the end of a teaching, from an unknown man, but it was exactly what I needed to hear, when I needed to hear it. The message the guy was sharing, was to be careful that we don’t seek people as our mediator, but that we seek the Lord for our instruction. It was my dream. And I felt the power of the prayer as he broke the spirit of witchcraft that brings confusion and weariness. You see, the Spirit knows all things, and if we let Him, He will always lead us to what we need, when we need it.
So today I leave you with this: I declare that we seek our Father for life, for our future, and for our present. I declare that we are Spirit led, and that our feet step in the path provided for us! I declare that we are discerners of the Holy Spirit, and that we don’t ignore, but rather keep our eyes, ears, and hearts open, seeking the leading of Holy Spirit! I declare that we won’t miss a thing, and that fear of missing anything is null and void. I declare that even when others do not understand our vision, our hearts are free from offence! I declare word curses are broken in the name of Jesus. Father, fill us with Faith, and ears to hear your call.
And always, invest time in learning to understand your dreams. They are a gift from our Creator.
